Moving house: the utility setup checklist
Utilities have different lead times. Water can take a day; fiber installation can take three weeks. Working backwards from move-in day is the only way to have everything live at once.
Three to four weeks out
Book internet and TV — these have the longest installation queues, especially where a technician visit is required. Confirm whether the previous occupant's line can be reactivated.
Two weeks out
Start electricity and natural gas in your name from the move-in date, and schedule the disconnect at your old address for the day after you leave. Arrange trash and recycling carts, and set up home security if the property has an existing panel.
One week out
Start water and sewer service, confirm the meter is on, and check whether a deposit is required. Set up mail forwarding and update the service address on your mobile plan.
Move-in day
Photograph every meter reading. Test hot water, the main breaker panel, and every outlet in the rooms you will use first. Report any missing service the same day — proving the start date is far easier in the first 24 hours.
Frequently asked
Can I set up every utility with one request?
You submit each service separately here, but you can mention the same move-in date on the call so the specialist lines the install dates up.
Are deposits refundable?
Usually yes, after 12 months of on-time payments, credited back to your account or refunded on close.
