How to set up water, sewer and trash at a new address
Unlike internet or energy, water, sewer and waste are typically provided by one municipal utility or one contracted hauler per area. The task is identifying the right one and starting service on time.
Identify the provider for the address
Water is supplied by a city utility, a county authority or a private water company depending on the address. Sewer usually follows water and is billed together. Trash is either city-run, included in taxes, or contracted to a private hauler.
Expected costs
Water and sewer commonly total $60 to $120 a month combined for a family home. Curbside waste and recycling generally add $20 to $45 a month where it is billed separately.
Lead times and deposits
Allow one to three business days for water and sewer, and up to a week for a new cart delivery. Deposits of $50 to $150 are common and refundable after a year of on-time payments.
